YOUNG ALUMNUS/ALUMNA ACHIEVER AWARDEE 2026

Prof. B. Aditya Prakash is currently the Associate Chair for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), USA.

After his B.Tech. from IIT Bombay, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, USA, in 2012.

Prof. Prakash has worked extensively on large-scale modelling and analysis of real-world networks and time-series, addressing critical societal challenges across public health, urban systems, cybersecurity, and the Web. His work has made foundational contributions by bridging algorithmic, machine learning, and AI techniques with classical domain-based models, enabling more robust and scalable data-driven solutions.

The tools developed by his research group have been deployed in several high-stakes environments, including the US Department of Energy’s EAGLE-I system, as well as in leading companies such as Dow, Facebook, and Walmart. His group was closely involved in multiple aspects of the COVID-19 response. Notably, his deep learning-based prediction methods were ranked among the most accurate for week-to-week real-time COVID-19 forecasts for the US Centers for Disease Control and were extensively featured in media outlets such as FiveThirtyEight.com.

Among the most fulfilling aspects of his career has been mentoring students and witnessing them go on to have successful careers as faculty members at leading universities and as innovators in major companies.

Prof. Prakash’s work has received multiple Best Paper and ‘Best of Conference’ awards at premier venues in machine learning and AI research. He was invited by the US National Academy of Engineering to participate in the Frontiers of Engineering programme, has received several industry Faculty Awards, the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and was named one of the ‘AI Ten to Watch’ by IEEE. His work has also won top prizes in international data science challenges, including the C3AI COVID-19 Challenge and the Harvard privacy PET Challenge.

Interests & Hobbies: Music (I play the Tabla recreationally), watching movies and reading non-fiction books.

Special Memories of IIT Bombay

Two of my favourite places to hang out on campus were the Shack and the lake near the guesthouse. I made close friends from CSE and Hostel 6, and the lessons I learned from faculty, seniors, and peers are only growing more meaningful with time.
