For the bright minds at IIT Bombay, the weight of solving global challenges should be the only burden they carry, and the greatest enabler of this vision is a safe, focused space to call home on campus. For years, however, the reality of campus overcrowding meant that academic ambition often had to compete with the search for privacy and a place to truly belong.
Through Project Evergreen, this narrative has been rewritten. In a landmark partnership with Coal India Limited, the vision extended beyond creating a dormitory to building a sanctuary.
The result is Hostel 21, a world-class residential space designed specifically for female students. Nestled on the eastern side of the complex, this nine storey structure replaces the constraints of the past with a “Cloistered Courtyard” design. Through its architecture, it preserves the campus’s verdant greenery, ensuring that nature remains a constant companion to the students within.
The true value, however, lies in the details that cater to the modern scholar. Designed to accommodate 368 women students, the project has delivered a self-contained ecosystem. From high speed tech rooms and ergonomic study areas to dedicated mini-gyms and a central dining café designed for organic networking, Hostel 21 ensures that a student’s home is as innovative as their classroom.
Enabling Women in STEM
By specifically increasing residential capacity for women, this project directly supports the national “Gender Supernumerary” initiative. This increase has the potential to enhance on campus accommodation access for women students by 11%, enabling greater participation and retention in technical education.
It ensures that the next generation of women leaders in technology have 24/7 access to the tools they need within a secure, serene environment.
Spaces Designed to Thrive

It is this blend of industrial vision and academic excellence that defines the “Evergreen” bond between Coal India Limited and IIT Bombay.
This partnership is not just building rooms; it is building the room for future leaders to grow.
