For a family facing a rare genetic disorder or a life-threatening illness, the greatest barrier to hope isn’t just the disease—it is the astronomical cost and limited accessibility of breakthrough treatments. Today, most advanced cell and gene therapies are developed abroad, making life-saving medicine a distant luxury for many in India.
At IIT Bombay, we believe that the next generation of cures should be born here and built for everyone.
Through a visionary partnership with the Alkem Foundation, we are closing this gap. The Alkem Research Centre for Applied Immuno-Therapeutics and Regenerative Medicines is located on a dedicated floor of the state-of-the-art Wadhwani Hub Academic Science Building 2 (ASB2). It serves as a premier hub for Applied Immuno-Therapeutics and Regenerative Medicines. It is a space where high-level science meets a deeply human mission: to make the most advanced medicine in the world inclusive and affordable.
The true “alchemy” of the Centre lies in its integration of biology and technology.
By combining integrative biology with AI-powered research, our teams are developing indigenous platforms for Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT).
Equipped with facilities for genetic engineering and cell culture, the initiative aims to create domestic alternatives to expensive imported therapies—potentially reducing treatment costs and improving accessibility for patients across the country.
This approach also supports the broader “Make in India” vision, strengthening local research and innovation capabilities.
As these platforms evolve, they hold the potential to accelerate therapy development timelines, enabling faster translation from research to clinical application.
This collaboration between the Alkem Foundation and IIT Bombay is a testament to what is possible when corporate responsibility aligns with academic excellence.
At the Alkem Centre, we are engineering a future where the sharpest technologies are used to heal—ensuring that for every patient, hope is never out of reach.
