Making Logistics Smarter, Safer, and More Efficient – FedEx

Every day, millions of packages move across cities, countries, and continents. Yet, behind this movement, lies a complex web of decisions, delays, and inefficiencies. From warehouse operations and long hauls across continents, to last-mile delivery, even small improvements can create large-scale impact.

At IIT Bombay, the FedEx Center for Advanced Logistics and Focused Analytics (FedEx ALFA) is working to address these challenges by bringing together academic research and real world industry insights. The goal is to make logistics systems and supply chains smarter, safer, and more efficient.

At the heart of the Center are multiple ongoing research projects focused on areas such as forecasting, optimisation, network design, automation, and workforce safety. These include solutions for smarter packaging, demand prediction, route adherence, return management, and even technologies like digital twins and real-time monitoring systems. By working closely with industry data and operational inputs, these efforts remain grounded in practical needs.

The impact is already taking shape. The Center is currently supporting 9 PhD scholars and 15 M.Tech. students, building a strong pipeline of talent equipped to solve real-world logistics challenges. Several of these students have presented their work at conferences such as Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), COMmunication Systems & NETworkS (COMSNETS) and Conference of Transportation Research Group of India (CTRG) – contributing to global research while staying connected to industry applications.

Through the IDEAS Programme (Innovation, Development, and Entrepreneurship with Alumni Support) at the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, IIT Bombay, student teams receive early-stage support to develop ideas, translate research into practice, and build potential real-world solutions, enabled through workshops, hackathons, and industry interactions.

Reimagining Logistics Through Innovation

What makes this initiative powerful is its scale and relevance. By combining analytics, digitalisation, and human-centred design, the Center’s work is expected to drive significant improvements in operational efficiency, enable cost optimisation across key logistics functions such as returns and routing, and strengthen workforce safety and productivity through technology-enabled interventions.

It is this integration of research, application, and collaboration that defines the ALFA Center – where ideas are not just studied, but tested, refined, and prepared for real-world impact.
