From Waste to Watts: Fuelling India’s Clean Energy Future – Tata Consulting Engineers

India’s growing mountains of waste are hard to ignore. With rapid urbanisation, millions of tonnes of municipal solid waste are generated every year—often ending up in landfills, causing pollution, health risks, and environmental damage. But what if this waste could be transformed into something valuable?

At IIT Bombay, a research project is doing exactly that—reimagining waste not as a problem, but as a powerful resource. The project focuses on a simple yet impactful idea: converting everyday combustible waste like paper, plastic, rubber, and textiles into useful forms of energy.

Using a lab-scale setup, the team developed a process that heats waste in a controlled, oxygen-free environment. Instead of burning it, this method breaks the waste down into three valuable outputs: oil, gas, and char—all of which can be used as alternative energy sources. What makes this initiative particularly powerful is its potential beyond the lab.

The research demonstrates that waste management doesn’t have to rely only on large, centralised systems in cities. Instead, smaller, decentralised units could also be set up—even in rural areas.

This not only reduces the burden on landfills but also opens opportunities for cost savings and job creation. The project has a working prototype of the pyrolysis system that has been developed and tested, proving that the concept is both feasible and effective. The research has also contributed to growing knowledge in sustainable waste management and has been shared at a national-level conference.

Beyond technology, the impact is deeply human and environmental. By reducing landfill dependency and lowering pollution, the project contributes to cleaner cities and healthier communities.

At the same time, it supports India’s broader goals of sustainable development and energy security by offering alternatives to fossil fuels. Importantly, the initiative also builds future capacity—training young researchers and strengthening India’s ability to innovate in critical areas like waste management and clean energy.

In essence, this project is more than a scientific effort. It is a step toward a cleaner, more self-reliant future, where waste is no longer discarded, but transformed into opportunity.
